Prayers for the Dominican Republic
O eternal God, we come to you today full of hope and excitement for the journey ahead. The path before us today was laid out by your son Jesus Christ, who so vividly showed us how to speak and serve. Lord we know the challenges facing the people of the Dominican Republic are hard, but that we are surrounded with support from brothers and sisters around the world. Lord, we believe in your works with all our heart and strive to reflect them here in Boca Chica. We ask you Lord to please keep close those struggling with troubled hearts and that you guide them to nourishing communities.
Mission Stewardship Moment from the Dominican Republic
Our van pulled up to the empty beach slowly, overloaded with people and supplies for the day ahead. As we emerged, we were immediately surrounded by boys of all ages smiling and hugging us. “We’re ready!” they exclaimed as we set up the table and sign up chart to begin our day mixing fun and work. Caminante believes that all children have a right to both recreation and education. These boys were about to receive plenty of both.
One of our team members, Julio Luis, ushered the boys away from the van to do various group games. This being the Dominican Republic, Caminante usually uses baseball in this role. However, that day was different - we played soccer! We practiced dribbling and passing, running back and forth. I shared what I know about the sport, and after trying my best, took pictures of the gathering.
Julio then called upon other members of the team to assist with the next portion. We ushered all the kids over to a shaded area beside the ocean to chat. Caminante uses these gatherings to raise awareness among the population on topics of children’s rights regarding recreation, freedom from abuse, and the importance of education. The boys, tired from the games, listened patiently and attentively. These are heavy topics, but important. The discussion encouraged the children to think of Caminante as a resource for any problems, and extended invitations to upcoming events.
