Puspa Sarker: Voice of the Poor

Puspa Sarker: Voice of the Poor

Church of Bangladesh Social Development Program Community Development Project, Bangladesh Mrs. Puspa Sarker lived in Karpa village with her husband. She was very poor and life was an endless struggle. Her family barely survived with the small amount her husband earned by binding pictures. She spent each day in frustration but never lost her hope for a better future. In July 2004 she was introduced to a CBSDP Community Organizer who motivated her to join with a group named “Mala Mohila Samity.” She used to save five taka weekly. After some months she took a loan of 2000 taka* to invest in the development of her husband’s business. At the same time, she started a home garden by establishing a small homestead area. She earned money from both of the projects and repaid the loan as per the official schedule. Then she took a second loan of 4000 taka to make a studio for writing signboard. She took a third loan of 6000 taka and purchased a laminating machine. Puspa created an employment opportunity for her husband and herself. She is earning enough to pay off her loans, educate her two children, have a sanitary latrine and safe water, establish a home garden, etc. All these things help her to fight against poverty. Most importantly, Puspa Sarker now has a sense of security. Abject poverty no longer clouds her vision. What she has achieved may not seem like much, but she has proved that nothing is impossible for a woman like her. *$1.00 U.S. = approximately 69 taka.
