Solidarity Strengthens Community Response at Cuba’s Martin Luther King Center
In Havana’s Marianao district in Cuba, the Centro Memorial Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (CMLK) continues to embody the legacy of its namesake through grassroots empowerment, theological reflection, and steadfast community engagement. Founded in 1987 out of the ministry of the Iglesia Bautista Ebenezer, the Christian-inspired, macro-ecumenical organization has grown into a national leader in popular education, social justice formation, and participatory community development across Cuba.

As Cuba navigates ongoing economic and social change, the Center remains a legacy institution—forming new generations of educators while adapting to emerging challenges. That commitment has taken on renewed urgency in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, which caused significant damage in eastern Cuba. In response, solidarity has once again crossed borders.
The Center recently received a meaningful contribution from Global Ministries supporting relief efforts for communities affected by the storm. The donation will go directly toward assisting those facing the hurricane’s aftermath, strengthening local response initiatives already underway.
“We continue to receive valuable signs of support that strengthen our work and commitment,” the Center shared in a statement of gratitude. “Each contribution represents a concrete gesture of hope and companionship.”

For CMLK, such partnerships reflect more than financial assistance; they are expressions of shared faith and mutual accompaniment. Through decades of educational ministry, justice advocacy, and community organizing, the Center has cultivated both deep local roots and international solidarity networks.
As recovery efforts continue in eastern Cuba, the Martin Luther King Center stands as a testament to faith lived in action—where solidarity is not an abstract principle but a tangible force helping communities rebuild, reflect, and move forward together.
