The relevance and usefulness of Theological Education: The experience in the Disciples of Christ church in Guadalajara
Carlos Sediles-Real serves the Theological Community of Mexico (CTdeM).
In this last period of missionary service (June – December 2022), we served pastorally in the Disciples of Christ Church in Guadalajara, Jalisco. A highly enriching experience for our ministry, allowing us to link the academic learning of theology seminars with ecclesial and pastoral work. Our mission service, since its beginnings in 2017, was framed in the relationships of brotherhood and collaboration between Global Ministries, our Christian Mission Church of Nicaragua, and the Theological Community of Mexico. In this last year, the Disciples of Christ Church of Mexico joined.
Our contribution to missionary work was given as a contribution from the Christian Mission Church of Nicaragua. In the first stage, we worked directly with the Theological Community of Mexico and its seminaries, offering courses in different programs: bachelor’s degree in theology, diploma in Bible, and master’s degree in biblical sciences. In addition, we gave talks, seminars, and workshops in churches and communities to strengthen their capacities in preventive health, human development, conflict resolution, and family care from a biblical, theological, and pastoral perspective. In recent years we have also collaborated in the pastoral field with the call to the pastorate that the Disciples of Christ church in Guadalajara made us. Within these two axes of work, I wish to share the following achievements:
1. Theological Education
During 2022 we continued to offer, as part of our missionary work, courses in the different programs of the Theological Community and its Seminaries:
a. Pauline Letters (Licentiate in Theology).
b. Synoptic Gospels (Diploma in Bible).
c. Pastoral Letters (Licentiate in Theology).
d. Advice on research work (Graduates of degree).
e. Workshop on the book of Proverbs (Methodist Church of Mexico).
f. Workshop on Biblical Anthropology (Seventh Day Church of God Seminar).
g. Acts of the Apostles (Diploma in Bible).
h. Scientific Research Methodologies (Bachelor of Theology).
i. Catholic Letters (Bachelor of Theology).
j. New Testament Theology (Bachelor of Theology).
k. Workshop for preachers (Discípulos Church of Guadalajara).
We celebrated being able to share with people who came from diverse faith traditions and different backgrounds. In addition to the courses, it was also very satisfying to serve the churches in some non-formal training processes through workshops on biblical and pastoral issues.
2. Pastoral accompaniment
Last year, we provided pastoral support to the local Disciples of Christ church in Guadalajara, Mexico. This work meant responding to a specific call in this beautiful ministry. As part of the pastoral tasks that we assume, the following stand out:
a. Visits to families to meet their spiritual, moral, and material needs. These visits were part of a coordinated plan with the congregation’s leadership. The primary purpose of the visits was to provide accompaniment and pastoral counseling.
b. Preparation and implementation of the preaching plan taking into account the needs and problems presented by the congregation and the broader community.
c. Coordinate the meetings of the Board of Officials to deal with ecclesial affairs during the time of pastoral accompaniment.
d. Develop community pastoral actions (church social action) as part of the testimony and timely announcement of the Gospel in the community.
e. Participate in ecumenical activities to strengthen relationships with other churches and Christian organizations.
f. Implement a training plan at the Bible School level with pertinent topics.
g. Accompany and advise the work of the different organizational instances of the church: youth, children, women, and men.
h. Plan and implement prayer days plan.
We are deeply grateful to the Christian Mission for the trust and opportunity to serve during these five years in the missionary and pastoral field. We are also thankful to the Theological Community of Mexico for opening its doors to share our gifts and learn from the ministry that takes place there. To the Disciples of Christ church in Guadalajara for the care and attention they gave us with great affection. Likewise, we thank Global Ministries for their trust and for continuing to contribute to making these stories of transformation and testimony possible.
La pertinencia y utilidad de la Educación Teológica en la Pastoral:
La experiencia en la iglesia Discípulos de Cristo en Guadalajara.
En este ultimo periodo de servicio misionero (junio – diciembre 2022) tuvimos el privilegio de servir pastoralmente en la Iglesia Discípulos de Cristo en Guadalajara, Jalisco. Una experiencia sumamente enriquecedora para nuestro ministerio, permitiéndonos vincular el aprendizaje académico de los seminarios de teología con la labor eclesial y pastoral. Nuestro servicio misionero desde sus inicios en el 2017 se enmarcó en las relaciones de hermandad y colaboración entre los Ministerios Globales, nuestra iglesia Misión Cristiana de Nicaragua y la Comunidad Teológica de México. En este ultimo año se sumó la Iglesia Discípulos de Cristo de México.
Nuestra contribución en la labor misionera se da como un aporte de la Iglesia Misión Cristiana de Nicaragua. En la primera etapa trabajamos directamente con la Comunidad Teológica de México y los seminarios en ella representados, ofreciendo cursos en los distintos programas: licenciatura en teología, diplomado en Biblia y maestría en ciencias bíblicas. Además, impartimos charlas, seminarios y talleres en iglesias y comunidades para fortalecer sus capacidades en temas de salud preventiva, desarrollo humano, resolución de conflictos y cuidado de la familia desde una perspectiva bíblica, teológica y pastoral. En los últimos años también logramos colaborar en el campo pastoral, con el llamado al pastorado que la iglesia Discípulos de Cristo de Guadalajara nos realizó. Dentro de estos dos ejes de trabajo deseo compartir los siguientes logros:
- Educación Teológica
Durante el 2022 continuamos ofreciendo, como parte de nuestra labor misionera, cursos en los distintos programas de la Comunidad Teológica y de sus Seminarios:
- Cartas Paulinas (Licenciatura en Teología).
- Evangelios Sinópticos (Diplomado en Biblia).
- Cartas Pastorales (Licenciatura en Teología).
- Asesoría en trabajos de investigación (Egresados de licenciatura).
- Taller sobre el libro de Proverbios (Iglesia Metodista de México).
- Taller sobre Antropología Bíblica (Seminario Iglesia de Dios Séptimo Día).
- Hechos de los Apóstoles (Diplomado en Biblia).
- Metodologías de la Investigación Científica (Licenciatura en Teología).
- Cartas Católicas (Licenciatura en Teología).
- Teología del Nuevo Testamento (Licenciatura en Teología).
- Taller para predicadores (Iglesia Discípulos de Guadalajara).
Celebramos el hecho de poder compartir con personas que proceden de diversas tradiciones de fe y contextos diferentes. Además de los cursos, también ha sido muy satisfactorio poder servir a las iglesias en algunos procesos no formales de capacitación a través de talleres en temas bíblicos y pastorales.
- Acompañamiento pastoral
Durante este año brindamos acompañamiento pastoral a la iglesia local Discípulos de Cristo ubicada en la ciudad de Guadalajara, México. Esta labor pastoral significó responder a un llamado específico en este hermoso ministerio. Como parte de las tareas pastorales que asumimos sobresalen:
- Visitas a las familias para atender sus necesidades espirituales, morales y materiales. Estas visitas fueron parte de un plan coordinado con el liderazgo de la congregación. El propósito principal de las visitas era brindar acompañamiento y consejería pastoral.
- Preparación e implementación del plan de predicación tomando en cuenta las necesidades y problemáticas que presentaba la congregación y comunidad más amplia.
- Coordinar las reuniones de la Junta de Oficiales para tratar los asuntos eclesiales durante el tiempo de acompañamiento pastoral.
- Desarrollar acciones de pastoral comunitaria (acción social de la iglesia) como parte del testimonio y el anuncio oportuno del Evangelio en la comunidad.
- Participar de actividades ecuménicas para fortalecer las relaciones con otras iglesias y organizaciones cristianas.
- Implementar plan de capacitación a nivel de la Escuela Bíblica con temas pertinentes.
- Acompañar y asesor el trabajo de las distintas instancias organizativas de la iglesia: jóvenes, niñez, mujeres y hombres.
- Planificar e implementar plan de jornadas de oración.
