There is a world beyond the stone walls of New England

It was a beautiful church on a very cold afternoon!  We arrived at the church accompanied by soft winter rays of sunlight and lots of wind.  Inside, warm hugs and a room delicately decorated with flowers on the tables and cookie souvenirs waiting for us.  Everything was ready to welcome all those who would arrive to be a part of our presentation!

What a beautiful feeling; in every hug we felt the affirmation of those who waited for us.  They accepted us with our limited English, with our life stories, with the connection we have without having met before, without having seen each other’s eyes.

At the end of the presentation, we asked the question: “What is the precious stone you will take with you from our presentation this afternoon?”

A woman to our right started by saying: “The world is bigger than this city.”  Then, way at the back, another voice answered: “There is a whole world out beyond the stone walls of New England.”  As heads shook in agreement a third voice stated: “To remember we are disciples – sometime we need to be reminded.”

This last phrase moved me deeply.  Perhaps the stone walls are not only in New England.  Many of us do not have any information about what happens in other regions, other countries, other churches, and even, our far away families.  What happens to that whole wide world that doesn´t show up out in the news?

Standing before those people, stirred by our presentation, I asked myself: “Who is beyond?  Whom have we not reached?  What invitation is the Lord of life making to us about looking a little beyond what we know and remember we are Disciples?  We have been sent.  We have much to share, starting with our lives and testimonies, our experiences, our learnings, and our challenges. The invitation that the Lord is making is for us to think of those who are never thought of, of those not names, of those beyond our stone walls.

¿A quiénes aun no hemos alcanzado?
