What are your priorities? This is the Story of the Community of Porvenir
There are still places on earth that do not have the basics of life. That is the reality that many Nicaraguans live in this century. Many people live in the mountains of Matagalpa, which is in the north of the country. It is a difficult place in which to grow food. I do not know if it was a way to find shelter or if it was the hand that was dealt to them to cultivate their future. The story of life in the communities I was visiting with CIETTS last week is very similar. They decided to move to those places because they had nowhere to grow, their ancestors were growers and it´s what they learned and continue doing today.
In the early in the 80s, a few families decided to lay claim and settle on land they were told could be good. This is how the community of Porvenir, as it was called by its first inhabitants, was born. It started with four leaders who decided to begin planting, knowing they had to grow food for their families. Their goal was to have twenty partners that they would find along the way. They started cleaning the area. There were 200 blocks of virgin forest, with many species of animals and plants. They were doing what they knew to do, cultivate the land. This is how they began to grow coffee and corn, the two main crops that exist in this mountainous geography and cooler weather, all done in community. Clearing and cultivating the land together, the profits they received from the sale of crops were distributed between the families. This is how the community grew.
The first achievement that this community had was to obtain title to their land, which was the result of land reform. They fought until they achieve it. After this, they wanted to improve their homes for their families. The houses were made completely by wood. They even had wood tiles on the roof. The second achievement was to open a road, since previously they only had a trail for walking to get to the town. They asked that the mayor send them a tractor. They received the tractor and managed to clear a path so one can get to the community more easily. The third achievement came in 2000 with the first school, 20 years after being an established community. Then came water purification so they no longer drink water without chlorination. Finally, in November 2014, they managed to have electricity in their community, even though they do not yet have a refrigerator in their community. There is only one family with 1 electric plate, but there are 8 TVs which they share between the families. For them, remembering the achievements that their community has accomplished is very nice because they realized how hard they have worked despite having many shortcomings. They have what they consider the basic necessities of life. They depend on Mother Earth for their life, without land they do not feel safe.
However, since last year they are facing a very serious problem, drought. This came to the country very aggressively, climate has changed in the mountains, and the community has not been able to grow like other years. The little they managed to harvest, pests and diseases finish off. So it is urgent that we all begin to change our way of consumption, which today may be a necessity for you, but not the farmer. His priority is to have suitable land to harvest, but if that land does not have the needed rain, nothing that they sow can be harvested.
The founders of Porvenir, which in Spanish means “future,” gave the community that name because they thought that their community would give them a prosperous future, a future that would come and satisfy their need for bread.
Pray that this lack of water resources do not continue to affect them in their need for bread. People in the community have had to find other ways to survive, even moving to other places to work, which has separated families. We know that God in God’s mercy continues to lay his hand on his people, but we are the most responsible of all the changes that have been generated by climate. God bless you.

¿Cuáles son tus prioridades? esta es la Historia de la Comunidad del Porvenir.
Aún hay lugares en la tierra que no cuentan con lo básico para vivir. Esa es la realidad que viven muchos Nicaragüenses en este siglo. Muchos son los que buscaron su lugar de vida en las montañas de Matagalpa, al Norte del país, no sé si fue una manera de refugiarse o si fue lo que les toco para cultivar su futuro. La historia de vida de las comunidades que estuve visitando junto a CIETTS toda la semana pasada es muy similar, decidieron irse a vivir a esos lugares porque no tenían donde cultivar, sus antepasados lo hacían y fue lo que aprendieron y hasta el día de hoy continúan haciendo.
Fue así que a principios de los años 80, unas cuantas familias decidieron hacer soberanía en unas tierras que les dijeron podían ser buenas para establecerse, fue así como nació la comunidad del Porvenir, así le llamaron sus primeros habitantes, se inició con cuatro líderes que decidieron plantaron su primera piedra y que su principal objetivo era obtener el alimento para sus familias, su propósito fue tener veinte socios más y los fueron consiguiendo en el camino, comenzaron la limpieza del lugar, 200 manzanas de bosque virgen, con muchas especies de animales y plantas, haciendo lo que sabían hacer, cultivar la tierra, es así como comenzaron con el cultivo del café y el maíz, los dos principales cultivos que se daban en este tipo de geografía montañosa y de clima más fresco, todo lo hacían en comunidad, limpieza del terreno, cultivar la tierra juntos, se repartían los bienes de lo que recibían de la venta de sus cosechas y así fue creciendo su comunidad.
El primer logro que esta comunidad tuvo fue obtener los títulos de sus tierras, el cual fue producto de la reforma agraria, lucharon hasta lograrlo, luego de esto fue mejorar sus casas para sus familias, esta era de madera completamente y hasta el techo tenia tejas de maderas, El Segundo Logro fue abrir el camino, ya que antes solo tenían un sendero para llegar caminando, insistiendo en su Alcaldía para que les enviaran un tractor, lograron abrir un camino y así poder entrar a su comunidad más fácilmente, El tercer logro fue tener una escuelita y este logro lo consiguieron el año 2000, o sea luego de 20 años de estar establecidos en su comunidad, luego de esto vino la potabilización del agua, ya no bebían agua sin clorar y finalmente en Noviembre del año 2014 lograron tener luz eléctrica en su comunidad, aun no tienen una refrigeradora en su comunidad, solo hay una familia que tiene 1 plancha eléctrica pero si ya hay 8 televisores los cuales comparten para ver televisión.
Para ellos recordar los logros que tiene su comunidad fue muy lindo por que se dieron cuenta de lo bien que han trabajado y que a pesar de tener muchas carencias, tienen lo que ellos consideran básico para vivir, la tierra, ella es su vida, sin la tierra no se sienten seguros, por ello desde el año pasado están enfrentando un problema muy grave, la sequía, Esta llego al país de manera muy agresiva, el clima se descontrolo en sus montañas, ya no pudieron cultivar como otros años, lo poco que lograron cosechar, las plagas y enfermedades terminaron de comérselos, por eso es urgente que todos comencemos a cambiar nuestra forma de consumo, lo que hoy es una necesidad para ti, no lo es para el que es agricultor, su prioridad es tener tierra apta para cosechar pero si esa tierra no cuenta con la lluvia necesaria, nada de lo que siembren podrá ser cosechado.
La comunidad del Porvenir lleva ese nombre porque sus fundadores pensaron que su comunidad les daría un futuro próspero, un futuro que está por venir y que viene para saciarles su necesidad de pan.
Oremos para que esta falta del recurso hídrico no les siga afectando en su necesidad de pan, han tenido que buscar otras formas de sobrevivir, incluso la migración hacia otros centros de trabajo ha llegado muy fuertemente a la comunidad y las familias han tenido que separarse, sabemos que Dios en su Misericordia sigue con su mano puesta sobre su pueblo pero nosotros somos los mayores responsables de todos los cambios que se han generado en el clima.
