Pray for Egypt on Sunday, January 22, 2017

CEOSS_Pic_1.jpegLectionary Selection: Matthew 4:12-23

Prayers for Egypt:

Loving and Peaceful God!

We thank you today for those who heard your call to join Jesus in his mission and answered willingly. Will you continue to bless those, who like Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John, continue to serve in your mission? May this blessing extend to those who saw suffering in their communities around the globe and through you decided to bring relief to those who suffered.

We ask you to guide us to become a part of your mission for this world. Help us to hear how we might be called to serve others, and CEOSS_Pic_2.jpeglead our hands to answer Jesus’ call.

In your son’s name we pray,
Amen

Mission Stewardship Moment from Egypt:

In the past decade Egypt has struggled through sectarian conflict, political turmoil, and increased social division. Egyptians continue to work to overcome many CEOSS_Pic_3.jpegof these issues, but recent economic troubles have continued to exacerbate the problems. Since 1950, the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services (CEOSS) has aimed to serve the poorest and most marginalized communities across Egypt without regard for religion, race, class, or gender identity.

CEOSS manages development programs related to agriculture, entrepreneurship, health, education, advocacy, capacity building, and dialogue. TheCEOSS_Pic_4.jpeg programs include facilities such as conference centers, hospitals, book stores, and a publishing house. In the past year these programs reached over 2 million Egyptians and worked with over 250 NGOs and civil society organizations.

CEOSS’ oldest programs involve education, literacy, and health care for rural Egyptian communities. In the 60+ years since CEOSS was founded, many of these same communities remain under-served and CEOSS has provided opportunities to improve the quality of life for the members of the communities. Educational support and tutoring programs, as well as adult literacy courses, have allowed millions of Egyptians to be successful in school and provided greater means for individuals to provide for their families. CEOSS’ eye care programs, primarily Horus Hospital, have provided eye exams, CEOSS_Pic_5.jpegtreatments, surgeries, and prescription glasses to people around Egypt who do not have access to get to a large city for treatment.
