Baghdad to Grand Rapids: Welcoming Iraqi Refugees

Baghdad to Grand Rapids: Welcoming Iraqi Refugees

General Synod workshop on UCC’s Refugee and Immigration Ministries work with Iraqi refugees

Over two million Iraqi refugees have been forced to flee their country since 2003. For resettled refugees, the period of adjustment in a new land is challenging. Three members of Plymouth Congregational UCC in Grand Rapids will share their stories of helping one Iraqi family to resettle. They will give tips to churches considering or newly engaged in refugee resettlement in three areas: 1) cross-cultural communication, 2) finances, and 3) school/social interaction. Iraqi mother of three Thoraya Bashi will share personal observations of her family’s struggles as refugees, first in Syria, then in West Michigan.
