Leaders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ (UCC) expressed their support for Middle East peace initiatives last week in a letter addressed to Palestinian and Middle East partners following the Annapolis Conference held in late November.

Attending the conference were Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, members of the Arab League Follow-on Committee, permanent members of the UN Security Council, and other key international actors. They met at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland, signaling international support and launching negotiations for establishing Israeli and Palestinian states.

The international meeting set a goal of a Palestinian state by the end of 2008.

The letter to Global Ministries partners was signed by Sharon Watkins, Disciples general minister and president; David Vargas, president of the Disciples’ Division of Overseas Ministries and the Disciples co-executive on the Common Global Ministries Board; John H. Thomas, UCC general minister and president; and Cally Rogers-Witte, executive minister of Wider Church Ministries and the UCC’s co-executive with Global Ministries.
