Ecumenical Advocacy Network in the Philippines–Human Rights Restrictions

Ecumenical Advocacy Network in the Philippines has issued a plea for support from human rights supporters.

Dear Philippine human rights supporter,

Attached is a letter by the Ecumenical Advocacy Network in the Philippines, signed by 130 religious and human rights leaders, that we sent to Senator Patrick Leahy expressing our concern that appropriations for Foreign Military Financing for the Armed Forces of the Philippines has strong human rights restrictions. Senator Leahy heads the Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs.

You can help!  Call the offices of your state Senators and speak to the aide who handles appropriations, ask if the Senator has received the Leahy Letter. If not, offer to send it. You will likely not be put thought but get the email address of the aide and send him/her a message with the letter attached. Request that your Senator’s office contact the Leahy office expressing support for strong human rights conditions on the Foreign Military Financing aid for all branches of the AFP. If you don’t get a response in a few days, follow-up with another message or phone call.  Please let us know the response. We will be following the appropriations process to monitor support for the language and asks in the letter.

You can find contact information for your Senators at: http://www.contactingthecongress.org/

Sincerely,

Paul Bloom (prb@umn.edu) and
