Torture and Detention

Torture and Detention

*Take Action* Sign the Interfaith Pledge to Stand Against Torture

Torture happens throughout the world and most countries want it to stop. It is illegal, but that doesn’t prevent it from occurring.  Because prisons, jails, immigrant detention facilities, mental health institutions, youth detention facilities, and other places of detention are often not monitored, torture and abuse can occur – often by guards and other employees.

Torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment are contrary to our faith traditions and beliefs regarding the integrity of creation and fundamental dignity of the human being.

As people of faith, we have an obligation to protect those who cannot protect themselves and ensure that no person is tortured or abused.

Torture Awareness Month

June is Torture Awareness Month, a time when people of faith come together to oppose any use of torture as a violation of the human rights of all God’s people.

This June, as we commemorate Torture Awareness Month, we mark the 28th anniversary of the United Nations’ Convention Against Torture and honor the leadership of survivors of torture. We invite you to join us in prayer and action for a #TortureFreeWorld.

Two ways to get involved from our partners at the National Religious Campaign Against Torture:

  • Host a Film Screening: We are pleased to announce two new NRCAT films to resource our interfaith work to stop torture: “Breaking Down the Box” is a 30 minute film about the mental health, racial justice and human rights implications of torture in U.S. prisons and jails and how interfaith allies can work to stop torture. “Faithful Responses to the Torture Report” is a short film exploring interfaith responses to the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation into the CIA torture program. Sign-up with NRCAT to receive a copy of one or both films.
  • Join the 23 Hour Fast for a #TortureFreeWorld: More than 80,000 people in U.S. prisons endure solitary confinement for 23 hours of every day. During Torture Awareness Month, please select a day and time to spend 23 hours fasting in solidarity with people who face solitary confinement and other forms of torture in U.S. prisons from Guantanamo to your community. Sign up to join the 23 Hour Fast for a #TortureFreeWorld.
