Kalindri Bai

The following is an example where life would not have been the same if CHM had not intervened for Mrs Kalendri Bai, a 55 year old mother of five, and wife of a laborer.

Christian Hospital Mungeli (CHM), a mission hospital is committed to providing medical care to all patients irrespective of their socio-economic condition.  Also, with Global Links helping resource-poor communities by supplying surgical sutures, the costs for operations are more affordable.  The following is an example where life would not have been the same if CHM had not intervened for Mrs Kalendri Bai, a 55-year-old mother of five, and wife of a laborer.  She had a nodule on her neck for the past 5 years.  During the last two years, it started to grow in size.  She had heaviness in the neck, as well as difficulty in lying down.  Not having the money to take care of it and the fact that she could get along with life made the swelling only grow further in size.

She finally went to Ganayari Hospital (a private hospital), where she was examined and told that she needed surgery and could have malignancy. However, Ganayari Hospital did not have adequate resources to perform the procedure, so they referred her to a higher center. With a family history of losing her mother and sister to malignancy she was now scared and went to the city to another private hospital and the cost of surgery was such that she clearly could not afford the care and so she returned back to her village. She had heard about CHM from a relative who earlier had surgery for the same condition done at CHM. She advised her to seek treatment here.

Kalendri took the advice and came to CHM for further management. The surgery was clearly difficult with the massive thyroid mass that she had starting from anesthesia to the actual surgery. The medical staff performed a successful operation and the total cost for surgery was about $275 including surgery, medicines and hospital care. It was with great joy that she recovered .

Now after surgery and postoperative treatment she is better and looks forward to a brighter and healthier future with her family.
