Letter to Secretary Kerry Regarding Congo Elections

The General Ministers and Presidents of the UCC, Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer, and of the Disciples of Christ, Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, joined the Co-Executives of Global Ministries, the Rev. Julia Brown Karimu and the Rev. Dr. James Moos, in a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry raising concern about the prospects of fair and peaceful national elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo this November.

In the letter the leaders appeal “that unless the U.S. conveys a strong message and commitment to enact consequences in support of democracy, President Kabila will intensify his hold on power and Congo will again descend into instability and insecurity.. This would jeopardize not only the Congo’s constitutional democracy, but also the safety of the Congolese people and others throughout the region.
