An experience with the Methodist Seminary of Mexico
The Methodist Seminary Gonzalo Báez Camargo in Mexico City is a member of the Theological Community of Mexico (CTdeM, Spanish Acronym). Each year, The Methodist Seminary conducts ministerial training through their continuing education program. Through these training events, the Seminary seeks to strengthen and expand the capacities of pastors in the disciplines of theology, biblical, and pastoral care. These training events are held for one-week of duration.
This year, we received an invitation from the Methodist Seminary to facilitate a workshop on The Fourth Gospel: Jesus is the way, the truth, and life. We gladly responded to the call through our appointment at the CTdeM. The Methodist Church and Methodist Seminary Gonzalez Báez Camargo hosted three workshops and conferences:
- Annual Conference of Mexico (CAM)—Churches located in the State of Guerrero, State of Mexico, Mexico City, and the north of the State of Hidalgo.
- Annual Southeast Conference (CASE)—Churches of the States of Puebla, Tabasco, Veracruz, and Oaxaca.
- Northern Annual Conference (CAS)—Churches of the States of Hidalgo, Querétaro, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Colima, and Nayarit.
Every semester, the Methodist churches study a book of the Bible. During the first semester of this year, it was the Gospel of John’s turn. Through the workshop dynamics, pastors were trained in different methodological and hermeneutic tools for the study of this Gospel. Likewise, we presented the most important theological and Christological focus on the Fourth Gospel. We counted with the participation of 150 pastors during these three workshops/conferences during this past January.
The study of the Fourth Gospel involved taking on a Latin American perspective. With the assistance of the Bible Community Reading methods, we re-read the Gospel of the Beloved Disciple, considering its training context, its relationship to the other Gospels, and its structure, and its main theological approaches. The workshops considered dividing the text into smaller units to facilitate the study in congregations. Groups were structured from the main theological themes such as the theology of reincarnation, theology of the exodus, and theology of alliance. These theological emphases were part of the discussion within the Christological vision presented to us by this beautiful Gospel that emphasizes new and abundant life given by God through Jesus Christ.
From the symbolic wealth found in the Fourth Gospel, the participating pastors of the Methodist churches proposed community studies that had a transverse axis toward the fullness of life. In the increasing violent contexts, which are marked with symbols of death, it is fundamental and urgent to defend life. Through his teachings and life, Jesus served shared models for the formative and pastoral actions that will help churches regain hope and strength; thus, remain the light of the world. From our study of the Fourth Gospel, we hear the voice of Jesus saying to us: “I am the water of life, I am the bread of life, I am the way, the truth, and life, and I am the resurrection.”
The experience of accompanying this community during this formative time has helped us to strengthen the relationship of cooperation between seminaries who make up the CTdeM. It was also an excellent opportunity to continue learning from the churches’ work in the different communities of Mexico. These small contributions that are multiplying in surprising ways would not be possible without the solidarity of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ. We give thanks to God for this fraternity, becoming a sign and response to Jesus’ prayer: “…that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21 NRSV).

Una experiencia con el Seminario Metodista de México.
El Seminario Metodista Gonzalo Báez Camargo de la Ciudad de México, es miembro de la Comunidad Teológica de México (CTdeM). Cada año el Seminario Metodista a través de su programa de educación continua realiza una jornada de formación ministerial. En estas jornadas se busca fortalecer y ampliar capacidades de los pastores y pastoras en las disciplinas teológicas, bíblicas y pastorales. Las jornadas se realizan bajo la metodología de taller, con una semana de duración.
Este año fuimos invitados por el Seminario Metodista a facilitar el taller El Cuarto Evangelio: Jesús es el camino, la verdad y la vida. Este proceso de formación se dio en el marco del servicio misionero que prestamos en la CTdeM. Los talleres se celebraron en tres conferencias de la Iglesia Metodista que son atendidas por el Seminario Gonzalo Báez Camargo:
- Conferencia Anual de México (CAM) que comprende iglesias ubicadas en el Estado de Guerrero, Estado de México, Cuidad de México y el norte del Estado de Hidalgo.
- Conferencia Anual del Sureste (CASE) que comprende iglesias de los Estados de Puebla, Tabasco, Veracruz y Oaxaca.
- Conferencia Anual Septentrional (CAS) que comprende iglesias de los Estados de Hidalgo, Querétaro, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Colima y Nayarit.
Cada semestre las iglesias metodistas estudian un libro de la Biblia. En el primer semestre de este año le correspondió el turno al Evangelio de Juan. Es por ello, que los pastores y pastoras fueron capacitados en diferentes herramientas metodológicas y hermenéuticas para el estudio de este Evangelio. Así mismo, se presentaron los enfoques teológicos y cristológicos mas importantes que podemos encontrar en el Cuarto Evangelio. Con la participación de 150 pastores y pastoras de las tres Conferencias se celebraron tres talleres intensivos durante el mes de enero de este año.
El estudio del Cuarto Evangelio implicó asumir una perspectiva latinoamericana. Con la ayuda de métodos de Lectura Comunitaria de la Biblia releímos el Evangelio del Discípulo Amado considerando su contexto de formación, su relación con los otros evangelios, su estructura y sus principales enfoques teológicos. El taller consideró la división del texto en pequeñas unidades que facilitaran su estudio en las congregaciones. Estas unidades estaban estructuradas a partir de los principales temas teológicos como la teología de la encarnación, la teología del éxodo y la teología de la alianza. Estos enfoques teológicos se analizaron dentro de la visión cristológica que nos presenta este hermoso evangelio que enfatiza la vida nueva y abundante que Dios nos da a través de Jesucristo.
A partir de la riqueza simbólica que encontramos en el Cuarto Evangelio, los pastores y las pastoras de las iglesias metodistas propusieron estudios comunitarios que tuviesen como eje transversal la plenitud de vida. En contextos cada vez mas violentos y marcados por signos de muerte, es fundamental y urgente defender la vida. Jesús, su enseñanza y su vida sirvieron de modelos para proponer acciones formativas y pastorales que ayuden a las iglesias a recuperar la esperanza y las fuerzas para seguir siendo luz del mundo. Desde nuestro estudio del Cuarto Evangelio escuchamos la voz de Jesús diciéndonos: “Yo soy el agua de vida, yo soy el pan de vida, yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida, yo soy la resurrección y la vida”.
La experiencia de acompañar este tiempo de formación y vida comunitaria nos ayudó a fortalecer las relaciones de cooperación entre los seminarios que conforman la CTdeM. También, fue una excelente oportunidad para seguir aprendiendo del trabajo que las iglesias realizan en distintas comunidades de México. Estos pequeños aportes que se multiplican de una manera sorprendente no serian posibles sin la solidaridad de las Iglesias Discípulos de Cristo y Unida de Cristo. Gracias damos a Dios por esta fraternidad que se convierte en signo y respuesta a la oración de Jesús: “…para que todos sean uno. Padre, así como tú estás en mí y yo en ti, permite que ellos también estén en nosotros, para que el mundo crea que tú me has enviado.” (Jn. 17:21).
