Mourning the passing of peace-builder Baffour Dokyi Amoa

This was originally written and shared by the World Council of Churches.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) expressed sadness at the passing of Baffour Dokyi Amoa, who was respected and beloved within the ecumenical movement, through his leadership in the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in West Africa, the Christian Council of Ghana, and many of its member churches, as well as many institutions in other parts of Africa.

In a letter to the Amoa family, Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, WCC General Secretary-elect, writes:

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

It was with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of Mr. Baffour Dokyi Amoa. I write to express my sincere condolences as well as those of the World Council of Churches.

Mr. Amoa was respected and beloved within the ecumenical movement, through his leadership in the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in West Africa, the Christian Council of Ghana, and many of its member churches, as well as many institutions in other parts of Africa.

His genuine Christian and ecumenical positioning in our common struggle for just peace is a strong legacy that will continue to inspire younger generations. His ecumenical leadership internationally and nationally was inspirational and has been a blessing beyond his home church.

A highly motivated and effective peace builder, Mr Amoa constantly raised his voice to combat violence and abuse. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.

I extend my sympathy most especially to his wife Stella, their two sons, Reginald and Philip, their grandson, Jonas and a host of family members, work colleagues, and friends who mourn him. We pray that God will give you peace and strength during this time of separation and loss.

Your siblings in Christ join you in thanking God for the life and witness of Mr. Amoa and his contribution to church and society.

Yours in our common Lord,
Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay
WCC General Secretary-elect
