Prayers for Indonesia/Timor: Luke 18:1-8
O God, we trust in you, for you are gracious and just. The people of Indonesia prayed to you for decades to have a chance at democracy; the people of East Timor prayed for freedom. Some gave up in despair, but for those who kept their faith in you, you answered and gave the gift of a new beginning. Sustain them now in hope, so that through their faith in you, they may learn to trust one another as well, to heal the wounds and right the wrongs of the past, and together build the common life they have dreamed of for so long.
We pray for the work of the East Timor Truth and Reconciliation Commission, who released their report to the people this week. May the truth about the past bring the freedom to build the new nation on a foundation of justice and peace.
We pray for the Evangelical Christian Church of West Timor, Indonesia, which has adopted a new church order that at long last removes the vestiges of colonial power and makes a place for all of your people to freely participate in the life of the church and its ministry.
We pray for the people of West Papua, who lost more than 100 brothers and sisters to a deadly flood, and who fear that these unseasonable rains are a sign of human destruction of the balance of your Creation.
We pray for tolerance and mutual respect among all religious communions who call on your name, especially in West Java, where members of the Batak Protestant Church have been attacked and denied the right to worship.
On your own time and in your own way, you have always been faithful, O Lord. Because of your faithfulness, there is still faith on earth. Where there is faith there is hope, and we believe that those who hope in you will not be disappointed. Amen.
