Prayers for South Africa:

Dear gracious and loving God,

As we go through these trying times attempting to inoculate ourselves and our loved ones from those who look, act and think differently from ourselves, who upset our peace and threaten our well-being, guide us in the right direction and do what is right. Help us to build bridges instead of walls. Help us to be Christ centered instead of self-centered, and to be your extended hands in the world in loving service.

Please keep the following in your prayers:

The People of Southern Africa
As they gear up for local elections on August 3 of this year, as well as Lesotho and Zimbabwe who are experiencing varying levels of political strife and uncertainty.

United Congregational Church of Southern Africa
As they attempt to be a voice of justice and reason in the communities they serve.

Theological Education by Extension College (TEEC)
As they begin a new semester, in the training of pastors and lay leaders throughout Southern Africa and with a student body of more than 2,500 and as the college staff develops new academic programs. Praise God.

Mission Stewardship Moment from South Africa:
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to love those who love us and to hate those who hate us? You know what I am talking about; when our children give us a big hug, when a friend lends us money in a time of need, a person at work calls us beautiful. Well, I really love such people. At the same time, when people gossip about us or hurt those whom we love and who cause heartache, I find myself disliking such people.

That’s why I want to be honest with you. I really need to hear those words found in today’s scripture, Luke 12:49-56! They are a reminder of what is already known full well: that life is continuously filled with moments of difficulties, and differences with people where we find no common ground. However, through Christ Jesus we are given inner strength to preserve and to live by his principles and who taught us; to love and to love abundantly without having to have such love reciprocated. We are called to do it because it is the right thing to do.
