World Communion Sunday Resources
World Communion Sunday is the first Sunday in October (October 5th, 2025). We invite you to use some or several of these resources in your virtual or in-person worship.
Note: All Vimeo videos can be downloaded for easy use in your worship. We ask that any photos will children not be displayed on social media. Thank you.
Prayer
For World Communion Sunday, we are honored to share opening prayers from our global partners. The Iglesia Bautista Emmanuel in El Salvador and The Evangelical Pentecostal Union of Venezuela invite us into worship with words that reflect gratitude, unity, and hope. As we come together at the Lord’s table, these prayers remind us that across continents and cultures, we are one body in Christ, bound by faith and love.
Scripture Focus
This year’s World Communion Sunday resources highlight three powerful scriptures that remind us of our unity in Christ. From 1 Corinthians 12:12–27, we learn that the church is like one body made of many different parts, each important and needed. Psalm 133:1 celebrates how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in harmony. And in John 17:21–23, Jesus prays that all believers may be one, just as He and God are one. Together, these passages invite us to celebrate our differences while remembering the unity we share at Christ’s table.
- 1 Corinthians 12:12–27
- Psalm 133:1
- John 17:21–23
Worship Music
This World Communion Sunday, we celebrate the diversity and beauty of worship around the globe. Our global partners—Pacific Theological College in Fiji, Silliman University in the Philippines, The Union of the Armenian Evangelical Churches in Armenia, and The Church of Christ in Congo—share music that lifts our hearts and unites us in praise. As we listen and sing together, we are reminded that the Spirit of God connects us across continents, cultures, and traditions.
Call to Worship (Liturgy)
CALL TO WORSHIP
Written by Rev. Taisaku OBATA (Minister, Ube Church, United Church of Christ in Japan) Translated by Mr. David McIntosh (Overseas Liaison, United Church of Christ in Japan)
One: In a world that remains divided and in conflict, God is inviting us, to make us one.
Many: Today we gather around one table, in answer to God’s will.
One: What do we find at today’s table?
Many: God’s love, which endures all things and connects all things.
One: What is not at today’s table?
Many: The many powers of the world, which seek to stand over others.
One: Let us repent, and give thanks to God’s power to bring salvation to all who believe.
Many: Thanks be to God! Make us witnesses of Your love.
All: Let us worship together the true God, who makes us one.
Children’s Moment
World Communion Sunday is a special time to remind children that God’s family stretches across every country and culture. These Children’s Moments, “Learning About God’s Global Family”, based on scriptures from 1 Corinthians, Psalms, and John, offer simple object lessons, discussion questions, and prayers to help kids of different ages understand the meaning of unity in Christ. Whether your worship is online or in person, these activities will help young disciples connect with the global church.
Mission Moment
This World Communion Sunday, we celebrate the transformative work of Arunima Hospice and Snehakunja Children’s Home in Kolkata, India. What began as a mission to care for people living with HIV has grown into a sanctuary of healing, dignity, and hope. Children like Moitri and Mon, once vulnerable, now thrive in education, music, and life skills, embodying the power of compassion and community. Arunima and Snehakunja remind us that through love and Christ-centered care, lives can be renewed and futures restored.
Sermon Sparks
This World Communion Sunday, we are reminded through 1 Corinthians 12:12–27 that the church is one body with many members — each indispensable in God’s eyes. Rev. Dr. Michael Kalito’s sermon, “Honouring the Weaker Members,” calls us to live out the radical equality of Christ’s table, where the poor, the powerful, the overlooked, and the celebrated all kneel side by side. In a world that often values strength and status, Communion proclaims a different truth: the weak are honoured, the stranger is welcomed, and the body of Christ is whole only when every member is included.
Communion
Communion is a sacred meal that unites Christians across every culture and community. On World Communion Sunday, we remember that when we share the bread and cup, we are joining with believers around the world at Christ’s table. To help your congregation celebrate, you can watch two special videos that reflect on the meaning of Communion, or download one of our Communion bread recipes from global partners. These resources offer meaningful ways to experience the richness of our shared faith.
Benediction
We have been guests of Jesus Christ. We have received God’s good gifts. Now we go out in the energy of the Spirit to our homes, to our neighborhoods, to our workplaces ready to put Jesus’ words and being into action: to be the salt of the earth, to be light to the world, to seek justice, to make peace, to preserve the creation, to gain life for all.
The Blessing of the God we know as Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit be upon us all, today and every day. Amen.
By, Rev. Dr. Ian Alexander, Church of Scotland.
