Prayers for Mexico
The strength of the day according to the Mayan spirituality calendar: Ik – Wind
(Bold type words highlight the strength of the day.)

Heart of Heaven, Heart of Earth, you have gifted us life with your creative breath and shown us the path to build the Kingdom of Heaven. Each morning you invite us, stirring our hearts to be nourished by your sacred word. Do not let our steps falter. You send your servants to remind us of your creative vision, so that we may look upon and feel reality, recognizing whether we are living according to your plan. Send winds of renewal to our churches and communities, that there may be life marked by justice and dignity. May we not be deaf to your call, nor remain motionless; may we not place our work, business, and worries above all else. May the power of the wind, of your Spirit, propel our very being. We are all invited, stirred by your breath of life, to sit at the common table with you. In this sharing, may we discover ways to carry forth your word and message. Heal our hearts, cleanse our faces, and purify our beings, that we may be worthy servants of your choosing, dedicated to building up your Kingdom.
Prayer by Gerardo Torres, director of the Institute for Intercultural Studies and Research.
Mission Moment from Mexico

The doorbell rang. After looking through the porthole, a precaution in these uncertain times, the administrator at the Institute for Intercultural Studies and Research guardedly opened the door to a stranger holding a large sack of limes. “I have come,” the man explained, “to thank the tree specialist from this Institute. Ten years ago, he helped me plant lime trees on my land, and I want to share the abundance of the harvest with him.” The elderly forester, who worked tirelessly at the Institute to replant Chiapas with native species and fruit trees, died a few years ago. With tears in his eyes and a smile on his face, the farmer handed over the lemons, saying, “Thank you for the gift of the trees. It has taken years, but I want this organization to also savor the fruits of its labor.” As Catholics, Protestants, and seekers of Mayan spirituality, we prepare to celebrate the thirty-year anniversary of the Institute in 2027. We consider our deceased tree-keeper friend, the farmer, the trees, and that sack of limes and ask: “What seeds do we need to plant today to harvest the fruits we would like to share in the future?”
As with wind, the strength of this day, according to the Mayan calendar, may the creative power of the Spirit cleanse us, stir us into action, and send us out to gather all those who want to plant the seeds of peace and harmony, trusting that we will one day harvest justice and enjoy the fruits of our labor in the feast of lekil kuxlejal, abundant life, around the common table. (James 3:18)
