Ecumenical Christian Council of Guatemala

Concejo Ecuménico Cristiano de Guatemala

The Ecumenical Christian Council of Guatemala (Consejo Ecuménico Cristiano de Guatemala) is a prominent ecumenical body in Guatemala that brings together Protestant, Anglican, Lutheran, and other Christian traditions to advance dialogue, service, and social transformation. Based in Guatemala City and led by an inclusive board of church leaders, the Council’s mission is to provide a “common home” for believers of multiple traditions and to engage in meaningful collaboration across faith communities. With a vision rooted in justice, human dignity, and community well-being, the Council works across several strategic areas: pastoral culture of peace, youth and children empowerment, women’s and gender justice, migrants and territorial rights, and environmental stewardship. In its day-to-day work, the Council conducts theological education, youth formation, leadership training, national workshops, and public statements on pressing social issues. Given Guatemala’s long history of armed conflict, structural inequality, and environmental vulnerability, the Council positions itself as both a prophetic voice and an agent of reconciliation—promoting dialogue between government, civil society, and faith actors, defending Indigenous and rural communities, and advocating for systemic change. In recent years, the Council has faced risks associated with this public engagement—its offices were the target of a break-in in April 2025, underscoring the challenges faced by faith-based organizations working at the intersection of social justice and community advocacy. Despite such obstacles, the Ecumenical Christian Council remains committed to faith-rooted action, pursuing ecumenical unity, ethical leadership, and inclusive service in a complex national context.
