Prayers for Germany

God, when we follow your great commandment to love our neighbour as ourselves, we realise how much the current political changes and challenges in Germany affect us. So many people voted for the far-right political party, the (AfD). This party not only criticises us and church-state relations, but also what we stand for: a diverse, open, affirming, just and caring society for all who have lived in our country for generations or only a short time.
You know that we sometimes avoid discussions and debates within our families and congregations where people hold very different views.

Therefore, we ask you to help us find clear words and mindful expressions with which to speak about what we are committed to. Help us to continue the discussion and demonstrate through our actions, involvement, and example what the consequences of your commandment should be today and tomorrow. Let us translate into action and words the fact that your son excluded no one from the neighbourhood.
We ask this in the name of your Son, who taught us to love. Amen.
Mission Moment from Germany
With Reformation Day just around the corner, let us remember that the Reformation led by Martin Luther and others was a landmark event in our understanding of the relationship between the Church and the state, and their respective roles.

In his writing from 1523, Luther describes the roles of the state and the church at that time, namely the dukes and kings. The division of power is only one aspect he describes; the other should not be overlooked. In his Table Talks, letters and texts, Luther offers advice to the nobility on how to act as (Christian) leaders. While we may not agree with all his advice, we do agree with the underlying principles. It is the task of the Church and theological professors to read and interpret the signs of the times. We can learn from each other how to engage with very conservative politicians and focus on Christian ethical values.
We are therefore pleased to have our Kirchengemeinschaft/Church Communion with the UCC and to work closely with its strong partners, such as Global Ministries, the UCC and the Disciples of Christ. This cooperation also strengthens our collaboration with all our ecumenical partners in need.
