Prayers for Chile

Gracious God, we give thanks for the transformative work of EPES and all who labor for health, dignity, and justice in vulnerable communities. Bless the hands and hearts of those who teach, organize, and advocate for change, and empower every health promoter trained to be a beacon of hope in their neighborhood. Strengthen the women, families, and leaders who rise with courage to challenge systems of inequality and bring healing where there is pain. May their work continue to ripple across Chile and beyond, spreading your love through education, compassion, and collective action. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Mission Moment from Chile

What began in 1982 as a small initiative of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile has grown into a powerful force for justice, health, and dignity. Popular Education in Health (EPES) was born out of the urgent need to give voice and power to communities long overlooked in public health systems. From its early days responding to emergencies, EPES has become a leader in grassroots health education, equipping vulnerable communities—especially women—with the tools to organize, advocate, and transform their lives.

EPES trains local health promoters who, in turn, train others, building a vibrant network of support that has endured for over 30 years. Whether providing life-saving information on women’s health and domestic violence, fighting for stronger tobacco regulations in Congress, or walking alongside families recovering from disaster, EPES is present with compassion and commitment. Their vision of health includes not only the absence of illness but the presence of justice, dignity, and community strength.

Their impact stretches far beyond Chile, with the International Training Course on Popular Health and Education welcoming participants from across Latin America and as far away as Kenya and Uganda. Each year, new leaders are equipped to return home and spark transformation in their own communities. EPES reminds us that lasting change begins at the grassroots, grows through education, and is sustained by hope.
