Prayers for Indonesia

Gracious and Sovereign God,

We lift before You the nation of Indonesia in this season of economic, social, and political uncertainty. We pray for our leaders at every level of government. Grant them wisdom, integrity, and courage to make decisions that promote justice, peace, and the well-being of all people, especially those who are most vulnerable. Guide our nation through the challenges of a changing global economy and the uncertainties created by conflict and instability around the world.

We pray for families and communities facing the burden of rising living costs, limited opportunities, and an uncertain future. Sustain those who work faithfully each day—farmers cultivating the land, fishers harvesting the sea, workers, entrepreneurs, and all who contribute to the welfare of society. Renew their strength and grant them confidence that their labor is not in vain.

God of peace, heal divisions within our society. Teach us to respect one another across differences of religion, ethnicity, culture, and political conviction. May dialogue overcome hostility, understanding replace suspicion, and cooperation strengthen our commitment to the common good.

We especially remember the people of East Nusa Tenggara. Bless churches, schools, universities, and community organizations that accompany local communities in building resilience, nurturing young leaders, preserving cultural heritage, strengthening social harmony, and caring for creation. May their efforts inspire hope and empower communities to flourish with dignity and purpose.

May Indonesia be a nation marked by justice, compassion, unity, and shared prosperity. In Your mercy and steadfast love, hear our prayer.

Mission Moment from Indonesia

The Postgraduate Theology Program at Artha Wacana Christian University, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara – Indonesia equips church leaders through interdisciplinary and transformative contextual theology. Serving students from diverse denominations across Eastern Indonesia and Timor-Leste, the program integrates academic excellence, research, and community engagement to strengthen theological and pastoral ministry.

One notable example of the integration of research and ministry is the work of Dr. Elia Maggang and his team among farmer-fisher communities in Kukak, Pariti, Kupang Regency. The study revealed how local families sustain their livelihoods by combining farming and fishing in response to seasonal and environmental challenges, while understanding land and sea as gifts from God that must be cared for and shared responsibly. The project highlighted faith, ecological stewardship, and community solidarity as foundations for resilience amid climate change and economic uncertainty. Building on his commitment to contextual theological formation, Dr. Maggang also coordinated the development of Arete, an integrated curriculum for Children, Youth, and Young Adult Ministries during his ministry at Protestant Evangelical Church in Timor (GMIT) Emaus Liliba. Designed to provide continuity across developmental stages, the curriculum equips congregational leaders to nurture young people through age-appropriate theological education, strengthening discipleship and faith formation within the church.

Another research initiative, led by Rev. Dr. Fredrik Doeka, examined the indigenous tradition of mang gariang in seven communities on Alor Island. The study documented how Christians and Muslims maintain harmonious relationships through cultural values rooted in mutual care and shared ancestry. Community members support one another during religious celebrations, social events, and even the construction of houses of worship. The findings demonstrated that local wisdom can serve as a valuable resource for peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and social cohesion.

Research in Boti Village, South Central Timor, led by Rev. Dr. Ira Mangililo, focused on women weavers and their contribution to community well-being. The study found that weaving is not only an economic activity but also a spiritual vocation connected to cultural identity, respect for nature, and communal values. Building on these insights, the project developed a model of creative economic empowerment grounded in religious spirituality, showing that sustainable development depends not only on resources and technology but also on values that uphold human dignity and social responsibility.

Research outcomes have also inspired transformative community engagement. In Bonen Village, Baumata, a program led by Rev. Dr. Mery Kolimon worked with women weavers to strengthen organizational capacity, improve production quality, expand marketing opportunities, and preserve traditional weaving heritage. Through training and mentoring, participants gained greater confidence, economic opportunities, and the ability to sustain their cultural identity.

A further community engagement program in Flores Island involved faculty members and graduate students facilitating seminars, workshops, youth formation activities, interchurch dialogue, and visits to Catholic, Protestant, and Muslim institutions. The program strengthened ecumenical relationships between GMIT and the Catholic Church while promoting multicultural understanding and social harmony.

Together, these research and community engagement initiatives embody the mission of UKAW’s Master of Theology Program: cultivating theology that is rooted in local realities, responsive to societal needs, and committed to justice, peace, cultural preservation, community empowerment, and human flourishing. Through collaboration among faculty, students, churches, and local communities, theology becomes not only an academic discipline but also a transformative force for hope, dignity, reconciliation, and sustainable futures.
